Birthday Blessings
My birthday was on Tuesday of last week (August the 31st). That morning I woke up at 6:00am and went to the study lounge to begin my homework (I have a lot of homework!) An hour and a half later, I realized it was my birthday. I had totally forgotten! I always wondered what it would be like to forget my own birthday. It was strange!
After I remembered, I just kept it to myself. I didn’t really know anyone yet. We had all just met five days ago! I checked my Facebook and was comforted and deeply thankful to all my friends who wished me a happy birthday. Though I forgot, they hadn’t (or Facebook reminded them… but I like to think the former).
But Facebook didn’t keep my secret. I had become Facebook friends with a student on campus and he saw the birthday reminder in the news feed. He came and wished me a happy birthday and my secret got out. The campus sang happy birthday to me at dinner. The next day, Juanita (the cook) made me a giant chocolate cake. It was the best chocolate cake I have ever had!
During the spring months Lima is always cloudy. But the night of my birthday it cleared up a little and there was a beautiful sunset. I thanked God for my wonderful birthday presents: a semester in Peru, a great student/faculty body, and an amazing sunset!
